Welcome to Sew Sweet – The home for my passion. I was born in Holland and immigrated to Canada in 1949. I have always enjoyed being creative, and I started sewing when I was 15. When I was 16, I bought my own sewing machine – a Bernina, that at that time was $400, or the equivalent of a month’s wages. I did sewing, and also cross stitching, crewel, knitting, and crocheting, as well as folk art painting for many years.
I’m retired now, and over the last few years I’ve discovered painting furniture. I have done many pieces for my daughters and commissioned pieces, but mostly just enjoy doing my own creations. I’ve also been busy teaching my grandchildren to sew, and they have learned everything from reading patterns to the final hand stitching.
I have been doing craft shows off and on for the past 30 years – while the children were small I would put it aside and once they were in school I would start up again. I love going to thrift stores, yard sales, and local auctions, as well as looking online for the perfect fabric for my next creation. My husband is a big help, he does all of the repairs and together we do all of the re-upholstering.
Sew Sweet was born several years ago out of this love of being creative. I launched with a line of kids bags, pillows, and other creations. Today, not only do we have those, but also custom one-of-a-kind painted furniture that I sell on local sites and Craigslist, and you can find some of my finished work on either Pinterest or Annie Sloan.
